If you're in an accident, or need to rent a car, it can be invaluable. In fact, in more than 200 countries you can not rent a car at all unless you have an International Driving Document. In Europe, travel officials say "the International Driving Document is more necessary in some countries than others, but it's advised for most".
The International Driving Document can be a useful backup form of ID in case your original documents are lost or stolen
